So, you’re looking for a t-shirt? Yes.
A cotton t-shirt? Yes.
Know which one to go for? No idea.
I’m guessing that you got the same answers?
Not to worry because we're going to let you in on a few tips on how to choose the T-Shirt that is right for you.
Fabric Weight
Well, the first thing to consider is how heavy do you want it to be? It’s really down to what you're wearing them for.
If you just want a standard fabric weight then you are looking for something around a 140/150gsm. REMEMBER – The higher the gsm the heavier the garment!
Heavyweight garments start at about 175/180gsm and can go up to 210gsm+. Luckily, if you are looking for a heavy-weight T-Shirt it generally gives an indication in the product name.
Style & Fit
You also need to check the style and fit of the garment. So, basically if you don’t want a slim fit garment don’t go for one that says 'Slim Fit' in the description.
Always check the size guides though because between brands the 'chest to fit' sizes can differ. This may make a standard fit garment from one brand different from another brand. A prime example of this is SOL’s A European Brand and therefore a European fit. This fit does come up naturally slimmer than other brands such as Gildan which has a larger, more boxy style of fit
Fabric Content
The most important aspect to check when looking at T-Shirts is the fabric content.
I know that sounds a bit stupid when the first thing you think of is ‘ermm, but they’re cotton’ but hear us out!
Have you ever noticed that some T-Shirts are softer than others? Nicer quality? Wondered what the difference is? Why are they like that? How are they better than 100% cotton when they are cotton too? That's because the fabric is made differently.
Firstly, you have cotton. This is spun into a yarn and woven into fabric to make the components for a T-Shirt.
You then have ringspun cotton where the fibres are twisted more tightly resulting in the yarn being stronger and softer. There is also combed/semi-combed cotton. This is where the impurities in the cotton have been combed out, before being spun, making the fabric soft to the touch.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with standard 100% cotton but if you want a softer feel and a more durable garment, then go for the ringspun or combed cotton or both!!! Some are 100% ringspun combed cotton. Now that's a double whammy!!
Our last piece of advice… don’t go for Fruit of the Loom Original T-Shirt, unless you only want them to last a short period of time! They are great for a promotional garment but we would never recommend them otherwise.
